CASE STUDY | Crazy Bean
How we expanded our crazy bean cafe into an online store!

Crazy Bean started as a tiny hole-in-the-wall cafe on Great Bookham High Street in Surrey. As vegans themselves, Rob and Krissi wanted to create the kind of place they wanted to visit, to safely eat, shop and meet like-minded people. When they opened they saw how important this little place became to so many people.

Crazy Bean’s customers inspired them to build an ethical, vegan, online marketplace. The mission of this online marketplace was to not only give people a place to shop safely and securely online, but to support and encourage the amazing and inspiring producers that are brave enough to live the kind life and support this ever growing and exciting cause.

The challenge ahead

With a keen eye on expansion, the couple had an idea around a year ago to create a vegan website where like-minded people could market and sell their vegan-friendly products. The site would work in a similar way to Etsy and Trouva. Crazy Bean would be an ethical, vegan, marketplace which supports independent businesses and creates an easy, safe, and secure shopping environment.

Goals

To create an online market place that gives customers the opportunity to buy vegan friendly material, including clothing, beauty, food and gifts.
To give vendors the opportunity to sign up, sell and manage their products online.
Incorporate a commission structure which generates Crazy Bean revenue, but also ensure vendors receive their cut.
To champion the ‘vegan way’ forward, building a better future for customers and the world by creating, sharing and encouraging plant-based choices.

Solution

Our Designers and Developers set off to build the first ‘vegan Etsy’. Before we started the project and dived in head first with the website build, our expert Designers worked on the Branding.

Brainstorming and created a mood board complete with colour palette, examples of a hover-over and also mock-ups of the home page and a product page.

We also gave their logo a refresh and did a small bit of rebranding to make it appropriate for digital. We then designed and built the whole site on WordPress with the WooCommerce plugin.

Multi-vendor functionality

The marketplace aspect of the website is sophisticated with bespoke functionality. We constructed a complete eCommerce admin area, built on the frontend, so that any vendor could come to the website, sign up, and start selling.

Each vendor is given a login area with a vendor dashboard, whereby they can add and edit products and manage their commission and orders, as if they were in the WordPress admin.

To the online shop, we added filters including ‘product type’ and ‘price’ along with a ‘sort by’ drop down, to make it easy for customers to find what they are looking for.

Looking to the future

Both Rob and Krissi want their idea to go from strength to strength. They are participating in an exhibition called Vegefest UK this October and will be looking to drum up some new vendors to get the thing kick-started.

“We approached Web.com to create a brand new website for us and from the off we knew we were onto a winning relationship. We were impressed that the team wanted to understand the website objectives from the outset and that they were able to help us make key decisions. We didn’t need to know exactly what we were doing to get to a great outcome and Web.com guided us through how the site should work. The project timeframe was tight but they delivered and we’ve had such great feedback from customers and vendors! The team are great to work with, flexible and completely transparent which is rare these days!”
